The creator economy is booming—and with it, new challenges around brand safety and influencer partnerships are taking center stage. As more brands lean into creator-led marketing, they also ask an important question: How can we scale content without sacrificing control?
That’s exactly what we tackled in our latest webinar, “Brand Safety 101.” Hosted by Popular Pays’ Madeline Simpson (Senior Partnerships Manager) and Corbett Drummey (VP of Brand Collaborations), this session dove deep into what brand safety means today, how it’s changed, and how teams can confidently vet creators at scale—without slowing down.
Here’s a quick recap of what we covered.
What Is Brand Safety Today?
In the early days of digital marketing, “brand safety” was mostly a keyword game—think programmatic advertising, where brands would block certain terms or topics to avoid showing up next to unwanted content.
But when you move into the creator space, it’s a totally different ball game.
Creators are human. They have personalities, opinions, histories—and audiences who care about all of that. This makes the partnerships brands form with them feel a lot more intentional (and a lot more visible) than, say, an algorithmically placed banner ad. One misaligned post from a creator can lead to real consequences for a brand: headlines, backlash, revenue hits, and long-term reputation damage.
As Corbett put it, "When creators go off-brand, it reflects directly on you—even more than a programmatic ad ever would."
What Should Brands Watch Out For?
Not all risk looks the same—and not all of it is obvious. While some red flags are universally disqualifying (e.g. hate speech, inciting violence), others depend on your brand's values and audience. A wine brand might welcome creators who post about drinking, while a family-oriented brand might filter that out entirely.
That’s why a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. What matters most is doing the upfront work: defining your own brand’s “red lines” and identifying what’s truly off-limits for you.
And yes, that sometimes means saying no to a creator everyone else is chasing—because they’re just not the right fit. As Maddie put it, “Just because someone’s popular doesn’t mean they’re aligned.”
How SafeCollab Is Changing the Game
To help brands take the guesswork—and grunt work—out of vetting, we built SafeCollab, our newest AI-powered solution for creator analysis. It’s designed to scan a creator’s content across Instagram and TikTok (including images, captions, videos, audio, and even Google search results), flag potential issues, and let you customize your sensitivity settings based on what your brand actually cares about.
The best part? It takes minutes, not hours. And it finds things a human might never catch.
During the live demo, Corbett and Maddie shared their own account scans—highlighting everything from fireworks to funny wine shirts to a classic “your car’s extended warranty” meme. The point wasn’t to shame, but to show just how thorough and context-aware the tool is. (It even knew when a t-shirt was joking versus serious.)
For teams working with dozens (or hundreds) of creators, SafeCollab is a huge unlock. It saves time, increases clarity, and helps you feel confident in the people you’re partnering with.
Beyond Safety: Building Authentic, Long-Term Partnerships
Of course, vetting is just the beginning. We also talked about how to build lasting relationships with creators who truly align with your brand.
Some of the tips we covered:
Start broad. Test a range of creators to see who really resonates—then double down.
Use vetting tools to open the door to creators outside your “usual type” (you might be surprised who performs best).
Create clear, thoughtful briefs that let creators vet you in return.
When in doubt, consider working with creators for content production only—even if they’re not fit to post as an ambassador.
Long-term creator relationships are built on trust, transparency, and shared values—not just reach or follower count. Vetting tools like SafeCollab simply help you find those relationships faster.
