At Popular Pays, women are building our tech and changing the conversation

by Aana Leech | 6 years ago

We’re celebrating women doing the work in every part of our tech company.

Every March 8th during Women’s History Month the world celebrates International Women’s Day.

At Popular Pays, we’re taking today to celebrate women in tech. Popular Pays is a content-focused company and a creator community, but powering it all is a tech platform we’ve built in-house. The platform our team has built streamlines our clients’ content production workflow. Everything our tech team builds happens in partnership with the rest of our team; our client partners, client success managers, and designers provide valuable context to our product’s direction.

Today, women hold only 25 percent of computing jobs and earn only 28 percent of computer science degrees. Not only that, women receive fifty percent less VC funding for startups compared to their male counterparts, on average. We’re joining our voices with those encouraging women to embrace these roles, pursue degrees in computer science, and calling for gender parity in the startup world.

At Popular Pays, we’re proud to count among our team members women with roles in computer science, programming and engineering. We also want to expand the definition of “Women in Tech” to include every woman at our company. Women comprise 60% of Popular Pays’ executive team, and each of our departments has strong female representation. Each of our roles handle tech in their own way. When we share that information and create context across our company, we put our best foot forward.

For Sara Paul, a client partner at Pop Pays, context helps her “to understand the ins-and-outs of our product to take a consultative approach when working with clients.” She can clue them in on our roadmap and show them how we are staying one step ahead in the industry while keeping their needs top of mind along the way. For Jillian Bush, an iOS engineer at Pop Pays, context builds empathy for the end user. She notes that it is “easy to get caught up in the details of writing good code, and forget about the experience of the person on the other end.”

Context keeps our company aligned. We want every woman in every role at a tech company to see herself as having a place in the tech community, and empower her to get involved in steering the larger culture. Whether we are developing our product, shaping our product design, leading a conference roundtable, managing our finances, closing a deal, or guiding our clients to success — together we’re women who are shaping the future of the tech industry.

We have an incredibly talented female team that pushes our company forward every day. When we diversify our roles in the tech industry, we show other women that anything is possible. Helping more women see themselves in the tech industry also welcomes new perspectives; ones that spark creativity and innovation. We are excited to continue investing in the women that have brought us to where we are today and welcome those that will impact our future.
