The Pop Profile series is a peek into the creative process of some of the most talented people making content on social media. It’s a chance for them to step out from behind the camera, into the spotlight, and let us pick their brains. This month, we’re talking with editor and content creator Erik Velasquez.
You know brands come to Pop Pays to find content creators to create custom content for social, but did you know brands are also using our platform to connect with our network of videographers, editors, and bloggers to tap into our creative networks’ skills outside of content creation?
MobileWorks has been using our platform to outsource for editing and using our workflow tool to get the job done quickly and effectively. Erik Velasquez is one of the creators who has flexed his editing muscle to help MobileWorks turn raw assets into ads that can be used on social. We chatted with Erik about his creative journey to becoming a successful content creator and growing a following organically by staying true to himself and not imitating other influencers.
Who he is outside of work
I'm a 30yr old kid in a hairy man's body born and raised in California currently living in Phoenix, AZ. A second generation immigrant with a father from El Salvador and mother from Mexico. I went to school in Las Vegas at UNLV for radiology but after my internship I realized the hospital life was not for me so I turned to marketing. After college I moved out to Phoenix with my partner and I began helping him with his agency that specialized in influencer relations. I have two children (French bull-dogs) who spend almost every day with us since we get to work from home which makes them the biggest spoiled brats in the world.
On teaming up with his partner to create their blog
My partner and I worked the management side of influencer relations for years together when we realized the shortage of men in the industry. Since we were putting all this time into building other people's brands we decided to give it a go for ourselves. We each began our own social channels and created a cohesive blog (TheFrenchyToast.com) where I would create the media and he would be in charge of the writing. From there I discovered my passion for photography and cinematography and have been doing everything I can to improve on my craft with every new project.
On setting himself apart
From the start I always had a goal in mind and that was to just be myself and not try to imitate what the other successful influencers were doing. I always had a different style and personality than those around me and I wanted that to come through on my page. I also hold myself to a very high standard when it comes to the content I put out there. I never post something just to get more likes and follows and can sometimes go days without posting because I want to make sure I give my best every time. I'm very much appreciative for those who take the time to follow me so I never want to push them away by taking a step back or becoming complacent with my work.
On starting from the bottom
This journey has been nothing short of a rollercoaster. It all started with me begging for companies to send me a shirt in exchange for coverage to now doing full-blown campaigns with some of the biggest brands in the world. It definitely has its ups and downs just like any other business but the rewards are much more fulfilling knowing I put my blood sweat and tears into it.
Working with Pop Pays
At first, I started working with Pop Pays through their promotional campaigns but most recently I've been one of the creators on their MobileWorks campaigns. There, I take assets given by the client and convert them into ads that can be used on Facebook and Instagram. It's a very different line of work and comes with its own challenges but it's just as rewarding knowing that brands are using your work to help build their name.
On (not) picking favorites
This may sound cliché but honestly I love every campaign the same. Each one gives me another chance to think outside the box and come up with new concepts and ideas. Creating content is not only a job for me but also my biggest passion so I'm thrilled anytime a client chooses me to make something new for my audience.
On taking the risk to follow your passion
Leaving a comfortable job to pursue a passion is always a scary thing. I think every person needs to look at their own situation and make the smartest decision for them and their families. Just because its your passion doesn't mean it's going to pay well.
On finding inspiration
Anytime I'm struggling to find inspiration for a shoot I do the most millennial thing possible, scroll through Instagram. There are so many talented people displaying their work on a daily basis that it’s hard not to leave with a new idea or a need to try something new with my camera and props. Or sometimes, all I need to do is shut my brain off and do something else completely. The most mundane thing throughout my day can spark a new idea for me out of nowhere without me looking for it.
Last words
Just want to sign off by letting everyone know it really is NEVER too late to try something new. I picked up the camera for the first time only 2 1/2 years ago and have found a passion I never would've expected. But just because you have a passion for something doesn't mean you'll be good overnight. Be willing to keep learning and never be complacent!!
Big thank you to Erik for sharing his creative process and journey with us. You can keep up with him on Instagram and his blog.
